The temperatures are rising, causing some to think about adding toner in their skin care regimen. Toner, the step between cleansing and moisturizing, is a refreshing, cooling action that can prepare your skin, and improve absorption for the next product. But, too many people associate toner with teenaged pimples, remembering Bonne Bell and Breeze used in their youth, both alcohol based products.

“Toners have a bad rap,” said Dr. Paul Frank, a cosmetic dermatologist and the founder of the Fifth Avenue Dermatology Surgery and Laser Center. “They used to be associated with pimply skin and were alcohol-based or made to control the production of oil while rebalancing the skin’s pH levels.”

“Like anything else, they’ve dramatically changed. They’re now used as a second stage of cleansing, and treat a variety of issues. They can exfoliate, reduce redness, fight aging and brighten the skin,” Dr. Frank continued.

Per Dr. Alicia Zalka, a Yale-affiliated dermatologist, “Toner is something I consider a second step of the cleansing process. The benefit is that, when used correctly, it can help remove excess oils and dead skin cells that may lurk on the face after washing. To some extent a toner can help other skin applications penetrate more rapidly.”

Jennifer L. MacGregor, M.D., a Board Certified dermatologist at Union Square Laser Dermatology, says that “every person needs an individualized skincare regimen. Using a toner can be a nice way to add active ingredients like retinoids, antioxidants and exfoliants to your existing products.”

Toners have come a long way, and are now formalized for individual skin care needs. Most Rodan and Fields regimens includes a toner that is individualized to the unique skincare needs for the people who choose that regimen. The Redefine Toner is formulated to minimize pore size. The Unblemish Toner is formulated to clarify skin. The Reverse Toner is formulated to even skin tone. Rodan and Fields recommend that each step of the regimen, including the toner, are used on a daily basis.
